Enhancing Human Superorganism Ecosystem Resilience by Holistically ‘Managing Our Microbes’

چکیده

Microbes in the 21st century are understood as symbionts ‘completing’ human ‘superorganism’ (Homo sapiens plus microbial partners-in-health). This paper addresses a significant paradox: despite vast majority of our genes being microbial, lack routine safety testing for microbiome has led to unintended collateral side effects from pharmaceuticals that can damage and inhibit innate ‘colonization resistance’ against pathobionts. Examples discussed which Microbiome First Medicine approach provides opportunities ‘manage microbes’ holistically, repair dysbiotic superorganisms, restore health resilience gut throughout body: namely, managing nosocomial infections Clostridioides difficile Staphylococcus aureus neural systems (gut–brain axis) autism spectrum disorder. We then introduce risk analysis tool: evidence map. ‘mapping’ tool was recently applied by us evaluate benefits, risks, uncertainties pertaining breastmilk ecosystem. Here, we discuss potential role map methodology guide scientific societal efforts to: (1) enhance ecosystem resilience, (2) microbes’, (3) minimize adverse both acute chronic diseases.

Enhancing resilience of interdependent networks by healing

Interdependent networks are characterized by two kinds of interactions: The usual connectivity links within each network and the dependency links coupling nodes of different networks. Due to the latter links such networks are known to suffer from cascading failures and catastrophic breakdowns. When modeling these phenomena, usually one assumes that a fraction of nodes gets damaged in one of the...

Parasites of the superorganism: are they indicators of ecosystem health?

The concept of ecosystem health is derived from analogies with human health, which subsequently leads to the implication that the ecosystem has organismal properties, a 'superorganism' in the Clementsian sense. Its application and usefulness has been the subject of a contentious debate; yet, the term 'ecosystem health' has captured the public's imagination and woven its way into the current lex...

4 ° + : Ecosystem Resilience and Predictability

Introduction Due to the unprecedented speed of temperature change expected over the course of the 21st century and the lack of direct experience from past changes, models are used to assess the impacts of different scenarios of climate change. Recent research, however, revealed that inconclusive outputs of ecosystem models may occur as a result of instable model dynamics [1-3]. This research pr...
